Springtime in the Rockies
Springtime for us in Montana is one of our favorite times of the year. The green grass starts to shoot up as soon as the snow begins to melt, temperatures start to become more enjoyable for being outside, and we start filling our schedule with trips that will consume our summer that is just around the corner. Weather here in the big sky state changes by the hour, but overall, it’s a great time to be in Montana!
Last Saturday the upper section of the Beaverhead River opened, but we’ve been out and about on the Big Hole since the first of April. Fish are eager eaters in the spring, and we’re about to the point in the year where there are lots of items on the trout menu. Nymphing remains tried and true, but fish are hunting down a streamer and beginning to look up for dries. With the Skwala hatch finished up, most anglers are counting down the days before the Salmon Flies make their annual appearance. Want to fish a single small dry? Blue wings and caddis are more plentiful by the day. The Big Hole River is on the rise, but we don’t anticipate this year’s spring runoff to be very catastrophic. We keep our fingers crossed that we receive enough spring rain to get us through summer. Water is everything out here in the west. On the flipside, our reservoirs are full, and the tailwater fishing will be great all season.
Rack and Reel Montana will have a season full of anglers, sportsman, and vacationers, and for that we are thankful. Our goal here at the lodge is to share a glimpse of the place you keep reading about, and hearing your friends and family talk about. We still have a few openings in our schedule to fish, hike, sightsee or just relax under the Big Sky. It’s not too late to grab those airline tickets and book a trip, we’d love to share our summer with you. We can customize your vacation anyway you’d like, no two trips are the same. Give us a call to chat about dates, let’s make this the summer you’ve been waiting for!
